New article out – How homeland and residence society factors can drive support for the radical right among migrants?

Just out in International Migration! Mari-Liis Jakobson, Josefina Sipinen and Kaarel Taimla explore the reasons why some Estonians who reside in Finland, vote for the Finns Party in local elections.

Through an exploration of interviews and survey data, they show how sympathy towards radical right parties can be facilitated by not only the integration context in their residence country, but also by developments in their country of origin. For instance, many respondents supported the Finns Party based on ideological analogy, having previously become EKRE supporters in Estonia. Many also learned about the Finns Party and its positions through the Estonian (far right) online ecosystems, and the activists of EKRE’s extraterritorial party branch played an relevant role in campaigning for the Finns Party. In addition, the paper also contributes to understanding how the migrant experience in the host country can also facilitate supporting an anti-immigrant party, and how the homeland and residence country factors mutually amplify one another.
