SIDESTREAM Workshop Explored the Flexibility of Populism
On June 5–6, Tallinn University hosted an open workshop titled "Populism For, Against, or By the Minorities? Social Groups in Populism Research," organized within the framework of the SIDESTREAM project. The event featured presentations from 21 scholars representing Estonia, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Hungary, Germany, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Spain, Canada, the United States, and Brazil.
The workshop offered a valuable platform for researchers to share insights into how politicians and political parties — whether centrist, right-wing, or left-wing — employ populist strategies to portray different minority groups and, in some cases, attempt to appeal to voters within these communities. It also served as a forum for integrating diverse theoretical approaches and discussing the definitions of social groups and populism itself.
This workshop was held as part of the research project "Aspirations to the Mainstream While Remaining Radical: Strategies of Selective Inclusion by Populist Radical Right Parties," funded by the Estonian Research Council (ETAg).
Warm thanks to all participants, and the organizing team for making the event a success!
